Birth Their Way

About Candace

I read a passage once that mentioned how incredible it must be for an individual to have found their calling while moving through their life on earth. And they noted how sad it must be for those that never get to experience that feeling during their time on this planet. My experience resonates with the former, and I consider it a true honor to have found my path as a birthworker.

My admiration of pregnancy and birth began at a wee age. I have drawings in crayon of people birthing that were created by my little 5-year-old self. Something sparked a deep desire to be in the birth space, and I carried it with me all throughout my school years. I prepared myself in high school and college for a career as a maternity care provider, but what I witnessed along the way revealed to me that working for the medical industrial complex was not where I was meant to be. I deeply wanted to connect with pregnant people in a more meaningful way. I wanted to support them in their journeys not just through birth but before it and beyond.

Each birth I have witnessed in my 15+ years of experience supporting families as a doula in and around Wilmington, North Carolina, has reinforced the belief that birth is a transformative and deeply impactful moment in a person’s life. Becoming a parent, welcoming a new baby, the path to conception, and the journey surrounding pregnancy loss are all pivotal experiences that deserve compassionate and affirming support. How we are treated during these seasons of life leaves a lasting imprint, shaping our stories in profound ways.

In 2004, I attended my first birth as an observer. A couple of years later, I participated in my first doula training and officially embraced the world of birthwork. I became involved with a national birth advocacy organization, fueling my passion for educating people about their birth rights and options. In 2012, I began assisting a homebirth midwife in the area, deepening my knowledge of physiologic birth and hands-on care. My own experiences birthing at home with skilled midwives further solidified my dedication to this work.

Over the years, I have expanded my offerings to include childbirth education and placenta encapsulation, ensuring families have access to comprehensive, evidence-based, and holistic support. My approach is gender-affirming and trauma-informed, recognizing that each person’s vision for pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum is unique. No matter what your journey looks like, I am here to provide unwavering support, ensuring you feel heard, respected, and empowered throughout your birth and postpartum experience.

Birthwork is not just what I do—it is who I am. It is my great joy to walk alongside families as they navigate one of the most powerful transitions of their lives, offering knowledge, support, and advocacy every step of the way.
